Dyslexia Training Program Performance Report

The Luke Waites Child Development Center at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children has led the way in the recognition and training of children with dyslexia since 1965. Staff at the Center developed the Dyslexia Training Program (DTP), a series of 350 instructional videotapes designed specifically to teach reading, writing and spelling skills in a small classroom setting. The program itself has proven to be a tremendous help to communities and school systems and is today used in over 400 Texas school districts, as well as in many other national and international locations.

Since the implementation of the videotape program in 1988, the Child Development Center has gathered data and information about its effectivenes. These findings, presented here, show positive results from the program in these areas:

  • The definitive test results of children participating in the Dyslexia Training Program.
  • The marked difference in written language performance between children receiving Dyslexia Training Program instruction and those who do not.
  • The long-term impact of the Dyslexia Training Program on career development and self-esteem.

Great strides have been made in identifying and diagnosing dyslexia, but these efforts are only half the battle, Finding and implementing an effective training program, such as the one at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, is the important second step for the dyslexic child, Unfortunately, so little research exists on the effectiveness of training programs, that this second step is often the most difficult. This booklet is presented with the hope that parents and professionals will be better able to evaluate the effectiveness of the hospital's program as well as other training methods for the dyslexic child.

The hospital collected data over a four-year period (1987-1991) to track test scores of students using the Dyslexia Training Program. The scores were obtained from 2,037 children enrolled in Texas public schools, grades 2 through middle school. These students took a series of tests, or progress measurements, scheduled at periodic intervals throughout the program to check their progress.
